Charting a Greener Future: FRIN Chairman Hon. Abdulmalik Usman Joins Environmental Board Inauguration and Strategic Retreat in Abuja
In a bold move to reinforce environmental governance and sustainability in Nigeria, the Honourable Minister of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has formally inaugurated the newly appointed Chairmen and Members of the Governing Boards of environmental agencies across the country. The ceremony, held in Abuja, signifies a renewed national commitment to addressing the pressing environmental challenges of our time.
Among the key participants is Hon. Abdulmalik Ahmed Usman, recently appointed Board Chairman of the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN). We proudly congratulate Hon. Usman on this significant appointment, as he steps into a leadership role at one of Nigeria’s most vital environmental research institutions.
During the inauguration, the Hon. Minister charged the new Board members with tackling critical environmental issues, including:
- Climate change and adaptation strategies
- Desertification and land degradation
- Urban and rural flooding
- Waste management and pollution control
- Biodiversity conservation
The Minister urged the newly inaugurated boards to align their work with both national policies and global frameworks, such as the Paris Agreement, while placing strong emphasis on innovation, inclusive governance, inter-agency collaboration, and community engagement. He also expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering commitment to placing environmental sustainability at the heart of Nigeria’s development agenda.
Following the inauguration, a Strategic Leadership Retreat was convened to equip these newly appointed leaders with the skills, tools, and vision needed to drive transformational impact in their respective agencies. The retreat featured interactive sessions, technical workshops, and cross-sector dialogues aimed at fostering practical solutions to complex environmental challenges.
For the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, this moment marks a significant opportunity to deepen its mandate as a center of excellence in forestry research, conservation, and policy development. With climate-related threats escalating and deforestation continuing to endanger ecosystems and livelihoods, FRIN’s role has never been more vital. The presence of its new Chairman at this high-level retreat is a strong signal of the Institute’s readiness to step into a new era of innovation, leadership, and impact.
This new chapter is not just about appointments—it’s about building a resilient, greener, and more sustainable Nigeria. As Hon. Abdulmalik Usman and his fellow Board members take up their mandates, they carry the aspirations of millions who seek a healthier environment, sustainable resources, and a future where nature and development thrive together.
We at FRIN remain fully committed to supporting these goals and look forward to a future where our research and fieldwork continue to inform policy, empower communities, and safeguard Nigeria’s rich natural heritage.
