FRIN Leads Nigeria’s Bid for UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Status for Shere Hills Forest Reserve

Nigeria, led by FRIN and Dr. Zacharia Yaduma, aims to secure UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status for Shere Hills. The project focuses on biodiversity, sustainability, and community involvement.

In a significant move towards safeguarding Nigeria's rich biodiversity, the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN) is spearheading efforts to secure UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status for the Shere Hills Forest Reserve. Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Zacharia B. Yaduma, Director General of FRIN, Nigeria is on the path to preserving this ecological gem.

A Historic Moment for Nigeria’s Natural Heritage

The journey to nominate Shere Hills for UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) took a major step forward with the Second Expert Consultation Meeting, held at Crispan Suites Rayfield, Jos, Plateau State. This meeting marked a pivotal moment in Nigeria's commitment to conservation, biodiversity, and sustainable development.

Dr. Zacharia Yaduma, Chairman of the Nigeria Man and Biosphere Reserve Committee, emphasized the importance of balancing human development and environmental conservation. He spoke of Nigeria's deep commitment to preserving its natural heritage, stating that the nomination of Shere Hills aligns with the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, which promotes a harmonious relationship between people and nature for the benefit of future generations.

Shere Hills: A Gem of Ecological and Cultural Significance

Shere Hills is not only a natural treasure but also a cultural symbol for Nigeria. This stunning montane landscape offers unmatched ecological richness, including rare flora and fauna, and holds immense cultural value for local communities. The area also promises significant socio-economic opportunities through sustainable tourism, research, and conservation projects.

This project is part of the larger "Biodiversity Business in Omo Biosphere Reserve, Oban Biosphere Reserve, and Shere Hills Reserve" initiative, a multi-faceted endeavor that aims to address key challenges like poverty alleviation and biodiversity conservation while promoting sustainable economic growth in the region

Collaboration for a Sustainable Future

Dr. Yaduma emphasized the importance of scientific rigor and community inclusivity in the nomination process. He stressed that the voices of local communities, researchers, policymakers, and partners must resonate throughout the process to ensure a sustainable and inclusive approach to conservation.

Special thanks were extended to the Indian funding agency and the UNESCO team, whose support has been invaluable in advancing this ambitious initiative.

Objectives and the Path Ahead

The objectives of the initiative are clear:

  • Strengthen the nomination dossier to meet UNESCO's high standards.
  • Protect biodiversity, foster research and education, and ensure that local communities benefit from sustainable development initiatives.
  • Develop management frameworks that provide long-term benefits for both nature and the people who depend on it.

As Nigeria faces mounting ecological challenges such as deforestation, FRIN’s efforts in Shere Hills stand as a beacon of innovation, collaboration, and excellence in environmental conservation. This initiative signals Nigeria’s commitment to combining conservation with sustainable progress, ensuring the protection of its natural endowments for generations to come.
