FRIN highlighted climate-smart agriculture and sustainable forestry at the IITA outreach in Rivers State. With exhibitions, research, and tree seedling donations, it promotes eco-friendly farming and forest restoration.
The Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN) reaffirmed its dedication to sustainable forest management, conservation of flora and fauna, and climate-smart agricultural systems during its participation in the two-day agricultural outreach event organized by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) at Onne, Rivers State.
FRIN’s participation was a testament to its unwavering commitment to the restoration of Nigeria’s forest cover, a critical goal aimed at increasing the nation’s forest cover by 25%. The event, themed ‘Agricultural Innovations and Smart Farming for Agribusiness Entrepreneurs in Southern Nigeria’, brought together various stakeholders to discuss and promote sustainable agriculture and forestry practices.
At the event, FRIN’s exhibition stand featured a diverse range of economically viable, multi-purpose tree seedlings and research outputs on indigenous tree species. Interactive displays emphasized biodiversity, conservation, and ecosystem restoration, showcasing the institute’s commitment to both environmental sustainability and climate-smart agricultural solutions.
FRIN’s research scientist at the Onne Station, Dr. Henry Okonkwo, delivered an insightful presentation titled ‘Conservation of Garcinia Kola Hekel: Emerging Issues and Innovation’, alongside a team of FRIN Research Scientists. The presentation highlighted key strategic partnerships, smart farming techniques, and ecosystem services that play a crucial role in Nigeria’s agricultural and forestry sectors.
The event also underscored the value of inter-agency collaboration. By working closely with IITA and other regional stakeholders, FRIN enhanced networking, knowledge sharing, and fostered stronger partnerships within the agricultural and forestry sectors. Through exhibitions, presentations, and the distribution of tree seedlings, FRIN empowered stakeholders with the necessary tools and knowledge to promote sustainable agricultural practices and build a resilient, climate-smart future.
The Head of Swamp Forest Research Station, Onne, Dr. J.O. Ariwaodu, delivered a goodwill message on behalf of Dr. Zacharia B. Yaduma, the Director-General of FRIN, highlighting Nigeria’s rich and diverse ecosystem. From the coastal mangrove swamps of the Niger Delta to the Saharan Savannah in the north, Nigeria’s ecological diversity underscores the need for robust collaboration between forestry and agricultural stakeholders.
Dr. Ariwaodu’s message emphasized that these partnerships are essential for safeguarding the nation’s vast forest and agricultural resources, ensuring a sustainable future for both present and future generations.
Through its commitment to collaboration, knowledge exchange, and sustainable practices, FRIN continues to play a pivotal role in navigating climate change, combating land degradation, and fostering climate-smart agricultural systems that benefit both the environment and the economy.
